Thank You, Aunt Tea... You May Rest Now!

Hey, Y'all!

In today's blog, I would like to take a more serious approach. I can promise you, though, that today's blog is, as always, a unique one

As of 11:00a.m. PST on Christmas morning, I have completed Ms. Vivian's autobiography. This was a great Christmas present, given that I started writing my second book sometime in late April/early May.

One of the things that I thought about after completing Ms. Viv book was: "Wow, it's done—it's officially done!" However, as I was printing out the chapters and putting them in my binder, I thought about something else: an angel returned home while I was writing my book.

It is no secret that the Ms. Vivian character is a sweet homage to my dear sweet Aunt Rosie, a.k.a. "Aunt Tea." Not too many people know this, but I created Ms. Vivian as a means to cope with the bittersweet loss of Aunt Tea. When The Lord took Aunt Tea home on January 8, 2008, it changed my world forever. Suddenly, I was faced with all kinds of trials and tribulations, and I didn’t have anyone to talk to. Oh, sure—I had people to talk to, but they had problems just like I did. As I struggled to make it through the storms in my life, I also had to cope with the loss of such a lovable family member. It was then that I found a way through my grief, in the form of writing my first book, Simply Bret. In the process of writing my first book, I created Ms. Vivian as a way to deal with Aunt Tea’s transition.

It amazes me sometimes how it took my Aunt Tea to leave home in order for Ms. Vivian to be born.

When I started writing Ms. Viv's autobiography back in April 2010, something happened. Ms. Vivian started to take on a life of her own, and Aunt Tea slowly but surely stepped out of the picture. When I officially completed Ms. Viv's autobiography, I thought about Aunt Tea, and that's when it hit me: It was as if I was saying: “Aunt Tea, you can go now. I’m still gonna miss you like crazy, but you can go.”

Anyone who had a chance to meet my dear sweet Aunt Tea already knows how remarkable a jewel she was. Close friends knew how I would light up whenever I talked about my adventures with my Aunt Tea. Well, Aunt Tea is gone to Glory, but her spirit and her legacy continues to show itself—this time through Ms. Vivian.

Thank you for your inspiration, Aunt Tea—you may now rest. I love you.

Ode To Ralph

In today’s blog, we’ve got a special guest: Susan Ariel Gosinheimer-Douglas, the baby daughter of the late Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer.

Hello, Everyone.

I’ve had a couple of days to think about what I wanted to say. I knew that I wanted to thank each and every one of you for your prayers, your words of encouragement, and your condolences during my bereavement. It’s not easy losing a parent—believe me. I’m 51 years old, and I thought that my dad’s passing would be a little easier on me. Let me tell you—it ain’t no easier, even at my age. My next door neighbor Ms. Vivian said to me, “You could live to be as old as Methuselah—when your parents go home, it’s still gonna be tough on ya, Baby.”

And Ms. Vivian was not lying about that.

My mind goes back to this past Thanksgiving, when Bret and I saw my dad for what would be the last time. My sister Angie and I took a picture with Dad on November 27. Angie told Dad that she would get the film developed that week, to which Dad said, “I tell you what, Pumpkin—you and Susie can do what you wish, but I won’t need a copy because I know what y’all look like.” When Bret and I were set to leave Atlanta on November 28, Dad hugged me very tightly, and he kissed me on the eye. Then he said to me, “Take care of yourself, Susie Q, and know that Daddy loves ya.”

On November 29 at around 9 a.m. PST, I felt a jolt throughout my body. I didn’t think anything of it until five minutes later, when my mom called and told me that Dad went to Heaven. She told me how his transition was a peaceful one, and how she was right there to witness him take his last breath. It was then that I realized what my dad meant when he said that Angie and I could keep the picture that we took. I also understood why he kissed me on my eye—that was his way of saying, “See ya later, Susie Q!”

My final comments are simple—they’re the same comments that I made at my dad’s homegoing: For those of you who still have your dad with you, be grateful and cherish him, because he is your dad.

And Dad, thanks for taking such good care of me, Angie, and Mom. Until I see you again in Heaven, I love you.

From the Family of Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer

As many of you know, our dear friend and brother Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer passed away last Monday, November 29, 2010, at the age of 79. His homegoing service was held this past Saturday, December 4, 2010 in his hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Even though Ralph’s family and friends had heavy hearts, they did what they set out to do—celebrate Ralph’s life.

The Gosinheimer Family would like to send out their warmest appreciation and gratitude to those of you who sent cards, flowers, condolences, and most of all, your love and support.

Here is another picture for you all to enjoy. This is a picture of Ralph with his daughters, Angie (left) and Susie (right). This picture was taken on Saturday, November 27, 2010, just two days before Ralph went home to Glory.

“If you still have your parents with you, by all means, cherish them, because there’s gonna come a time when The Lord will call them home and by then, it’ll be too late to say that extra ‘I love you’ or ‘I’m sorry.’ I can speak for Angie when I say that we have no regrets, because we did what was right by my dad... well, best as we could anyway. Congratulations, Daddy—you’ve made it over.”
—Susie Douglas, on the day of Ralph’s homegoing celebration

Happy 80th Birthday, Aunt Tea!

Today’s blog is a little different. In writing about one of my characters, Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer, I took a little time out from my schedule to acknowledge a very special family member.

On this day, December 7, 2010, I celebrate my Aunt Rosie’s 80th birthday. In my family, she was affectionately known as Aunt Tea was more than just my aunt—she was my godmother and my very best friend. She used to say to me: “I’m your ichiban, your number one friend, your ace-boom-koom, and your homey.”

When Aunt Tea went to Heaven on January 8, 2008, and my world was forever changed. It took a while for me to get over her transition, but I stand here today a lot stronger than I was. Even though I still miss her—and rightfully so—I still rejoice in the fact that Aunt Tea is resting comfortably in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Life is amazing, isn’t it? It took Aunt Tea’s transition to Glory for the Ms. Vivian character to be born. I only created Ms. Vivian five months after Aunt Tea went home, and when I compared the pictures, I was taken aback. I guess that old adage of “life imitating art” still rings true.

Happy Birthday, Aunt Tea—and I shall see you again, ya’hear?

A Pictorial Essay of Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer

Hey, Y'all:

As was announced on this past Monday, the homegoing services for Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer are set for this Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. in Atlanta, Georgia.During this bittersweet celebration, Ralph's widow Charlotte took the liberty of sharing some pictures of her late husband. In the very first photo, Ralph was dressed up as Santa Claus, posing with his daughters, Angela (l) and Susie (r).

The next photo shows Ralph's fun-loving side, as he was dressed as a jolly old king for a Christmas play. One of the songs in the play was "Do You Hear What I Hear?" by Bing Crosby, and Ralph was excited to play the role of the king who told the people everywhere to pray for peace.

In this photo, Bret parents (left) took a picture with Ralph and Charlotte... and yes, that's Ms. Viv in the middle. These five seniors were celebrating the 30th wedding anniversary of Bret and Susie Douglas.

A Message from Charlotte Gosinheimer

Happy December 1, Everyone!

We are still in celebration of a life well lived in our dear brother and friend, Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer. As you know, Ralph passed away this past Monday at the age of 79 years old, with his wife Charlotte by his side.

Speaking of Charlotte, she has a message for each of you. Here it is:

My very first memory of Ralph dates back to the day we first met—April 30, 1953. We were both in our early twenties. I was working as a nurse at the Empire State Memorial Hospital, and as fate would have it, Ralph was my patient. He came into the emergency room one Tuesday afternoon, thinking that he suffered a broken leg. Fortunately, Ralph only had a severely strained hamstring. When I walked into his room, he forgot all about his injury and started flirting with me. I tried to be as professional as I could, but I couldn’t lie to myself—it was love at first sight. When I took his temperature, I noticed that his blood pressure rose. The doctor talked about putting Ralph on blood pressure medication, but I wouldn’t allow it. I looked at the doctor and said, “No, I think something, or someone, has excited Mr. Gosinheimer.” Almost immediately, Ralph said, “And she’s a cute little honey blonde nurse named Charlotte.”

As the young folk say nowadays, Ralph had good game. Needless to say, we dated during that year, and on New Year’s Day 1954, Ralph proposed to me. We got married on April 10, 1954, and lemme tell y’all: I enjoyed being Charlotte Renee Gosinheimer. Two years later on January 1, 1956, we welcomed a baby girl to the world—Angela Margaret. On June 1, 1959, we welcomed our youngest daughter, Susan Ariel.

In the 57 years that I’ve been married to Ralph, I’ve always known him to be nothing more but a devoted, loving, and caring man. He was also a jokester. He would tease Angie and Susie constantly, but I betcha that when push came to shove, he was always there for his little girls. When Angie and Susie found their respective dreamboats, Ralph walked them down the aisle on their wedding days. He also welcomed Frederick and Bret into the family the best way he knew how: he referred to them both as his sons.

This past Monday, November 29, 2010, Ralph went home to Glory. About an hour before he left, I heard him say: “Here I am.” I knew that I didn’t call him, and when I told him that, he said, “No, Char—I know your voice all too well; this is a different voice callin’ me.” Once he said that, I immediately ran to his side and held his hand. I wanted to make sure that he got to Glory safely. At around noon, he took his last breath, and although I had tears in my eyes, I rejoiced in knowing that he made it.

As you all have probably been told, the homegoing service for my dear Ralph are scheduled for this Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11 a.m., at Mighty Oak Baptist Church in my hometown of Atlanta, GA. My family and I extend our most sincere gratitude in advance for your kind words, well-wishes, and encouragement.

And Ralph, save a space for me, because I’ll see you when I get there. Love ya!

Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer, 1931-2010

Hello again, Ms. Viv 'Nim Fanatics:

Yesterday afternoon, I challenged myself like never before to write a blog about the passing of Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer. Since yesterday's blog, I received all sorts of comments and well-wishes from my fans. Some of you have even sent personal condolences to me, which I thought was very sweet. I must admit, though, that my favorite response overall was: "OH, LORD JESUS, NO—NOT RALPH!!!" (LOL!)

Okay, as I promised, here is the obituary for our late brother and friend, Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer.

Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer was born on March 17, 1931 in New York City, New York to Terrence and Gladys Gosinheimer, the youngest of three children. Affectionately known as “Ralphie” by his family, he attended Big Apple Elementary School, and then attended Empire State High School, where he graduated the seventeenth of his class.

After high school, Ralph set out to work as a construction worker. In 1953, he met and fell in love with Charlotte Renee Johnson. A year later, the two were joined in holy matrimony. To this union, two lovely daughters were born. After his youngest daughter got married, Ralph and Charlotte decided to leave the busy city life of New York City, and made their permanent residence in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ralph was described by many as an excited, happy-go-lucky individual. He was always positive and upbeat, even when circumstances and challenges crossed his path. His motto was: “Eh, I ain’t worried about it.” Ralph’s biggest claim to fame was witnessing his two daughters get married to two respective responsible young men. The even bigger blessing, according to Ralph, was helping celebrate the 30th wedding anniversaries of his daughters and their husbands, both of whom he christened as the sons he always wanted.

On Monday, November 29, 2010 at 12 noon EST, Ralph was called from labor to reward at the age of 79 years old. His parents and siblings preceded him. Ralph leaves to cherish his precious memory: his loving wife of 57 years, Charlotte Renee; his daughters Angela Margaret (Stansfield) of Atlanta, and Susan Ariel (Douglas) of Los Angeles; his sons-in-law Frederick Stansfield and Bret Douglas; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

We’ll be seeing you again, Ralphie—take care up there!

Celebrating Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer

Hey there, Ms. Viv 'Nim Fanatics:

In today's blog, I'm taking a different approach.

The toughest thing about being a fictional author is having to retire a character, especially when there is such a close bond betwixt the two. However, it had to be done.

I regret to inform you that Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer passed away today at 12 noon EST in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 79 years old.

Ralph had a peaceful transition, as his wife Charlotte was right there by his side. They had just shared another Thanksgiving holiday with family this past weekend. Ralph said on "Turkey Day" that if he were to go to Glory, he would go a happy man. Well, this afternoon, Ralph kissed his wife and said, "I'm going home today... I'm ready." Charlotte said that she had to be by Ralph's side and hold his hand, just to make sure that he made it to Heaven safely.

"He was really ready to go," Charlotte said bittersweetly. "When he took his last breath, I squeezed his hand and kissed it, then I placed it on his heart. I'm not worried none because I'll be seeing him again when it's my turn."

Ralph and Charlotte got married in 1953 at a little church in New York City. After their two daughters graduated from college and found their respective husbands, Ralph and Charlotte moved to the simpler life in Atlanta in 1981.

Homegoing services for Ralph Brandon Gosinheimer are scheduled for Saturday, December 4, 2010. Details will be forthcoming all this week.

Happy 75th Birthday to Our Favorite Senior Citizen!

Okay, y'all—this day was bound to happen, so don't act so surprised. Let's just get on down to the nitty-gritty.

They don’t come any sweeter than Vivian Jewel Jones, Baby!

This sweet, little silver-haired lady is the next door neighbor of Bret and Susan Douglas. Often known as Auntie Jewel or Ms. Viv, she is the typical, traditional Southern grandmother, greeting everyone she meets with “Hey, Baby—how you doin’?”

A native of the Mississippi Delta (Ruleville, Mississippi, to be exact), Ms. Vivian is the mother of five children, and a doting grandmother of seven. She is also recognized in her community as a good neighbor and a true friend. An avid churchgoer, one can find Ms. Vivian on the second row of the Mother’s Board at First Baptist Church every Sunday, and you can catch her at Bible Study on Wednesday evenings. “Oh, I reads my Word, Baby!” she says with a warm smile.

Ms. Vivian also strongly believes in reciprocity; she is always willing to help others as best as she can on account of she once needed help herself, especially when her husband Clark passed away in 1996. It has been over ten years since her husband's passing, and even though Ms. Vivian still misses him—and rightfully so—she still puts on a smile and lends an encouraging word to a listening ear. Such was the case when Bret was hospitalized, and Susie was visibly upset; Ms. Vivian encouraged Susie to see about Bret, despite the apprehension.

Ms. Vivian is very close to the Douglas Family—so close, in fact, that she automatically became a part of their family; she even suggested that Howard, Sarah, and Nicole call her "Aunt Tea." She is also known throughout the neighborhood as the woman who makes "the best damn strawberry seven-up cake in the world."

Ms. Vivian is also a very strong-willed (and sometimes stubborn) woman. She has been known to stand up to individuals that are much taller than her; all she has to do is stare them down, and they seemingly run off in terror. Ms. Vivian explains that when these certain individuals run away, they just notice her heavenly army that is constantly around her.

If she is not at a church meeting or visiting the Douglases, Ms. Vivian will be seen taking care of the elderly and the sick, watering the front yard, or taking an adventurous trip around Southern California with her eldest grandchild Candace.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT:
The day Obama became the 44th U.S. President

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT:
During a church meeting, I bumped my knee across the edge of a pew, and… you figure out what I said.

FAVORITE MOVIE: Remember the Titans

Nattie By Nature

Hey, Y’all!

Despite the busy day I had at my first book festival, I was able to create a blog in celebration of another birthday: Natalie Violet Marcellia.

Natalie Violet Marcellia is the youngest child and only daughter of Jack and Mary Ann Marcellia. She has one older brother, Jonathan Stephen, who currently resides in Atlanta, GA. When Natalie was born on October 2, 1984, her mom and dad were debating on her middle name. At that point, they overheard the doctor saying that Natalie “looks like a little violet.” Thus, she was christened Natalie Violet.

Natalie is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, but when she graduated from high school in 2002, her family moved to Torrance, California—just thirty minutes away from Bret and Susie Douglas. A shy sweetheart of a gal, Natalie had trouble making new friends, so she often gravitated toward her childhood friends Howard, Sarah, and Nicole. Natalie always had a crush on Howard, despite the latter's oblivious attitude. Here it is, some 20 years later, and Natalie still has feelings for Howard. When asked why she likes Howard so much, Natalie simply says: "Well, he's a good guy, and he's always been nice to me... even when he was 'mean' to me."

Natalie like to consider herself a "simple little Southern gal, born and bred in North Cacka-Lacky.

Happy Birthday, Miss Mary Ann

Okay, so yesterday, we celebrated Jack Marcellia's 57th birthday. How ironic is this--today is his wife's birthday. Let's get to know more about Mary Ann Hughes-Marcellia.

Mary Ann Hughes-Marcellia was born on September 30, 1957 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to William and Linda Hughes. She was often teased in school because she was born an only child, but Mary Ann worked for everything that she has been blessed with thus far, from school to now.

Mary Ann attended South Carolina University, where she joined Zeta Delta Gamma Sorority, Inc., and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, with a minor in Business Administration. Mary Ann feels that attending South Carolina University was providentially planned, as it was in her freshman year that she met and befriended one Bret George Douglas. On the day of registration, Mary Ann and Bret became best friends, to the point where Bret adopted her as his baby sister. Mary Ann’s parents lived right next door to Bret’s grandparents. Mary Ann also recognized that one Susan Ariel Gosinheimer had a crush on Bret; to learn more about this particular event, read Chapter Five of Simply Bret.

Mary Ann also found her true love in one Jack Edward Marcellia, and the two were wed in 1978. Within this union, Mary Ann gave birth to one son, Jonathan Stephen, and one daughter, Natalie Violet.

When one meets Mary Ann, the first noticeable trait is her lovely Southern accent, which is somewhat reminiscent of the late Rue McClanahan.

Good Ol' Jack, Charlotte's Other Favorite Son

In today’s blog, I would like to acknowledge the birthday of one Jack Edward Marcellia. Let’s take a look at his profile.

Jack Edward Marcellia was born on September 29, 1954 in Charlotte, North Carolina to Henry and Margaret Marcellia. Born an only child, Jack was a “loud, lovable soul” since birth. Despite his very ebullient disposition, Jack did experience some heartbreak at the age of 12, when his father passed away. Jack took the role as “man of the house” to help his mother in any and every way possible, be it housecleaning or tending to the garden.

After high school, Jack attended and graduated from South Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. Jack was also great in sports, as was evident by his love for baseball and football; his true love, however, was wrestling, and this was proven everytime someone mentioned the name Ric Flair.

It was also at South Carolina University that, prior to graduation, Jack found his college sweetheart, Mary Ann Hughes, who later turned out to be the love of his life in an ironic twist of fate. The story goes that Jack and Mary Ann were both best friends with one Bret Douglas, and one fateful afternoon, while Bret and Mary Ann were celebration the completion of their freshman year, Jack locked eyes with Mary Ann and winked at her. Bret knew that both of these “crazy kids” were crazy about each other, so he merely suggested that they at least go out on one date; Bret also promised to support both Jack and Mary Ann, no matter the outcome. Well, Jack and Mary Ann did go out, and the rest, as they say, is history. Jack and Mary Ann ultimately got married in 1978, and raised two children, Jonathan Stephen and Natalie Violet.

After spending most of their lives in Charlotte, Jack decided that he and his wife and children needed a better life, so the Marcellias headed west to Southern California in 2002. They now reside in Torrance, California.

Aside from being a great family man, Jack is blessed to be Bret’s best friend for well over 30 years. It’s also important to point out that within said 30 years, Jack has referred to Bret as “Bret my boy,” of which the latter refers to Jack as “Good Ol’ Jack.”

An Open Letter to Clark Kenneth Jones

First of all, let me express my most sincere love and appreciation to those of you who have already purchase a copy (or three) of Simply Bret. Thus far, I have sold 144 copies, and I am still climbing—thanks be to God.

Today’s blog is a little different, as it is simply a letter that Ms. Vivian wrote ten years after her husband Clark passed away, and here it is:

Dear Clark:

Well, my love, here it is—ten years to the day that you went home to Glory. I guess that I don’t need to tell you how much I still miss you down here. Let me first of all thank you for taking good care of me in the 34 years that we were married. I didn’t have to want or need for anything, because I prayed for a good man who could TCB… and Darlin’, my prayers were sho’ answered; you went above and beyond the call of duty. I want you to know from the bottom of my heart, that I’m still gonna get you for leavin’ me down here with the rest of these hellions (ha-ha-ha)!

Even though I’ve managed this long without you, Darlin’, I still have flashbacks. Every so often, I’ll call your name, or I’ll run upstairs to get you. Hell, I’ll even call up at the school sometimes. Old habits die hard, you know, but yet and still, I know that you are okay… and at the same time, I still miss you like crazy, Darlin’. I sho’ can’t wait ‘til my name gets called when it’s my time, but in the meantime in between time, I’m gonna keep on livin’. Oh, yeah—while it’s on my mind, Bret and Susie have been taken such good care of me over the years, and so has Ted the mailman… God bless their hearts.

Well, my love, I have nothing else to write about, but then again, you know everything that goes on down here on account of your special heavenly room with a view. I’ll be talkin’ to you again in my heart, but just in case, you still better be good while you’re up there… ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Love You Much,
Viv

Side Note: Ms. Viv wrote this letter on August 31, 2006.

Happy Birthday To A Princess of Promise

In today's blog, we celebrate Sarah Elizabeth Douglas, who turns 26 years old today. Here is her story.

Sarah Elizabeth Douglas is the middle child and firstborn daughter of Bret and Susan Douglas. Born in Culver City, California, Sarah has been given the reputation of being "the kinda gal that every man wants to be with, and every woman wants to be like." She is respectful and respected; she carries herself in the way that a woman should. Sarah had a high school sweetheart, but only after graduation did she realize that the guy she was dating was a bit obsessive, so she called it off. Since then, Sarah has decided to stick with her true love—writing.

Sarah is a graduate of Cal State Northridge, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Print Journalism. It is said that Sarah is an excellent writer, and that she has a way with words. She is currently working on a series of children's books featuring a self-made character that she created since junior high school. Aside from this wonderful gift, Sarah is totally oblivious to her silly side. She has been known to make googly eyes and funny faces, just to get a good laugh.

Sarah also has a secret admirer in one Kevin Frazier, a young lad who lives across the street. He fell for her ever since he saw her dressed like Cinderella one fateful day, and the fact that she kissed him on the forehead was icing on the cake for him. Sarah was flattered by Kevin's crush on her, so she became his Valentine, despite the fourteen-year age difference.

Sarah knows that she is incredibly gifted, yet she feels stuck in a job that is going nowhere. She has constantly dealt with blatant politics in the office, and each time she voices her opinions, she is told that she is jumping to conclusions and is overly sensitive. One incident took place at her job where a female co-worker pushed Sarah in front of the supervisor, and once Sarah retaliated, the supervisor reprimanded Sarah. Obviously frustrated, Sarah reported this incident to Human Resources, but after witnessing how callous her co-workers acted, Sarah decided to step out on faith and quit her job. Since quitting her job, Sarah is now enrolled at graduate school. She also has taken a shine to one Duane Anoai.

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT:

Spotlight: Melissa Leilani Roberts

To celebrate my birthday (as only I know how), I have decided to spotlight one of my personal favorite characters, Melissa Leilani Roberts. Isn't it convenient that I made her birthday the same day as mineJuly 12!

Melissa Leilani Roberts is the girl next door... actually, she is the girl who lives just three houses down from the Douglas Family. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California on July 12, 1985 to Franklin and Clara Roberts, Melissa is the only child and only daughter. As a child, Melissa was a tomboy, as she constantly hung around Howard. Despite being considered as "one of the boys" per se, Melissa had a bit of a crush on young Howard, of which the latter reciprocated. But one day, Melissa grew up, and blossomed into a beautiful young lady. After graduating from Oklahoma University in 2007, Melissa moved back with her parents, and the very first individual who noticed how she blossomed was Howard. To this very day, Howard considers Melissa as one of his angels. Melissa appreciates the fact that Howard has always treated her the same.

Melissa graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, but she does not know what to do with her major as of yet. Currently, she works as a data entry clerk in Downtown Culver City, but she knows that her true passion is acting and modeling. Melissa is also the oldest of Howie's Angels-- she has been best friends with Sarah and Natalie "like, forever and stuff."

Although Melissa has openly admitted that she is not flawless, it has been unanimously agreed upon that she does not have a problem with self-confidence. Someone at her job branded her as conceited, to which she reprimanded the individual and said: "No, no, Hon-- I'm not conceited... I'm convinced!" Melissa is often misunderstood by some of her elders, just because she is a young woman with a butterfly tattoo on her shoulderblade, a shooting star tattoo on her ankle, and a navel piercing. While she admits that she was much younger when she decided to get said items, she is happy with her decision, and defies anyone to judge her just because she is not the typical "squeaky clean" girl next door. One person that she does not have to worry about judging her-- outside of Howard, of course-- is Ms. Vivian.

While Melissa enjoys being a "girlie-girl," she is admittedly still a tomboy. She loves football, basketball, and wrestling.

Happy 51st Birthday, Sweet Little Susie!

Hey, Y'all!

In celebration of Susie Douglas' 51st birthday, I decided to take this time out and honor her, as only I can (LOL)!

Lest I forget: Happy Birthday, Susie—and remember to celebrate it the entire month!

She's the upbeat and fiery matriarch with a heart of gold. She’s also known as Bret’s better half. She's Susan Ariel Gosinheimer, and she was born and raised in New York City, New York on June 1, 1959 to Ralph and Charlotte Gosinheimer. The youngest of two girls, Susie (as she is affectionately called) has one older sister, Angela Margaret. As a child, Susie was the “adventurous, take-charge type,” according to her parents. She attended Empire State High School, where she graduated the fifteenth of her class. After high school, Susie decided that she wanted an out-of-state college experience, so she attended South Carolina University, where she literally met Bret George Douglas. Susie often reminisces about the day that they collided in the auditorium on the way to an assembly, and despite a slight miscommunication, these two became inseparable.

After Susie and Bret were wed in 1980, they moved to Culver City, California, where they raised three children, all of whom are working young adults. Self-confidence has never been Susie’s weakness, as she worked her way to the top of the ladder; she has worked at DGI Enterprises for over 25 years, yet she has been the HR Director for eleven years. Everyone at DGI Enterprises appreciates Susie for her great managerial experience, as she thinks with her head and her heart, and she knows how to smooth out a situation.

Susie's motto is: “I am truly blessed beyond all recognition." She is a true believer that all things do work together for good. A dedicated mother and wife with a remarkable sense of humor, Susie feels humbled and honored to have been blessed with her wonderful husband of 30 years, her three crazy children, and a job that she knows within her heart that she was born to do. Much like her husband, Susie is a member of First Baptist Church, where she mentors the Young Lilies every second Saturday. She also admits that she loves costume parties; she has dressed up as Marge Simpson, ThunderCat Cheetara, and a hippie chick.

Although Susie is a soft-hearted sweetie, she has admitted that she has a touch of a temper. Such was the case when she grabbed a rude receptionist by her throat and hurled her across a desk. Susie later explained that she only acted out in anger because she was informed that Bret was in the hospital, and this receptionist did not help matters at all. Susie has been told time and time again that her temper might wind up getting her into trouble, to which Susie has stated: "That's quite alright—I've got enough ass to back up my temper!"

MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT:
The day I ran into Bret… literally!

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT:
Only one stands out— when I unknowingly slammed a door in Bret’s face.

My Marketing Research Plan for Bret & Susie's 30th Anniversary

To quote my best friend Big Chris: "You can't make this stuff up!"

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, I decided to follow through with my plan, which was to begin working on my second venue for my next book signing. I decided that I would make my next book signing a double event; not only would I sell and sign copies of Simply Bret, but I would also celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary of the main characters, Bret & Susie Douglas.

In order to fully follow through with this plan, I acted as though I was Bret (this is the mark of a true author). I found myself ring shopping-- not for any reason in particular other than for marketing research. The first jewelry store I stopped by, I perused around until I saw the ladies' rings; they all looked sparkly. "Susie would love a ring like this," I thought to myself. At that moment, one of the employees of this particular jewelry story asked if I needed help. I told her that I was in the process of writing my second book, and that one of the chapters was dedicated to Bret and Susie. As I spoke, I noticed how this woman looked at me as though I was crazy, yet she continued to listen to me. Once I explained that I was feeling the role of Bret as he went ring shopping for his wife of 30 years, the woman looked at me and said, "Oh... well, good luck with that."

I simply thanked her and left for another jewelry store.

I started to check out the rings in JC Penney when I noticed a second jewelry store-- Kevin Jewelers. Once I entered said store, I was greeted warmly and asked for whom I was shopping for. Much like I did at the first store, I explained that I was an author who was in the process of writing a story about Bret and Susie's 30th anniversary...

Now, this is the part where we come around in full circle.

Earlier on in this blog, I quoted my best friend Big Chris: "You can't make this stuff up!" Well, just as sure as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, the employees at Kevin Jewelers asked me if I had a picture of Bret and Susie. Naturally, I did, and I presented the drawing of the 30-year couple. After complimenting how cute Bret and Susie looked, the employees asked me questions as though they were speaking to Bret. In the midst of the conversation, the employees mentioned how they thought Susie adored diamonds... which is ironic, because she does. Well, after my experience at Kevin Jewelers, the employees thanked me for choosing them for doing my research at their store, and wished me well in my second book.

Now, all I have to do, is draw a picture of Susie's anniversary diamond ring, which will be debuted at the 30th wedding anniversary/book signing. Until next time, take care and God Bless.

From Dream To Reality: My First Book Signing

The apostle Paul reminds us in II Timothy 1:6 that we “stir up the gift of God” that is within us. Well, I must be adhering to this particular scripture, because ever since Simply Bret was published, I’ve noticed how The Lord is helping me get closer and closer to my dream. Since enrolling in graduate school at the University of Phoenix, my dream to become a producer has seemingly sparked something in my creativity.

As many of you know, my very first book signing took place on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at my church home, True Vine Baptist Church in Inglewood, California, where Dr. Austin F. Williams is my pastor. I would once again like to thank Pastor Williams and my True Vine family for their love, support, encouragement, and prayers. I also would like to thank my mom, who I affectionately have nicknamed "Momillennium." I stated to her publicly that her present was well on its way. "It's gonna take a little time getting there, but trust me, Mom-- it's on its way," I said as she smiled.

Of course, I know two other individuals who would've looooooooooooooved to have been there in attendance... but then again, they were there in spirit.

Aunt Tea & Uncle Cecil-- this was for you: I LOVE YOU!!!

In Memory of Clark Kenneth Jones

In today's blog, I would like to talk about the very first character that I created when I was nine years old--Clark Kenneth Jones. I hope that you enjoy his story.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF CLARK KENNETH JONES

Clark Kenneth Jones was born August 13, 1934 in Memphis, Tennessee to Harold and Patricia Jones. He was the fourth of six children, and even at such a young age, he dreamt of becoming a teacher, as he himself was a big kid at heart, and younger children seemed to gravitate toward him.

Clark was an active member in church, dating all the way to when he was four years old. He was quoted as saying: "And when I say active, I mean cotton-pickin' active!" Clark was a member of the choir, on both the junior and senior Usher Board, and was even chosen to be put on trial as a deacon—the latter of which did not work out so well. "Oh, well—two out of three ain't bad," Clark joked.

After high school, Clark attended Fisk University, where he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Education. He worked as a substitute Fourth Grade teacher in his hometown of Memphis, until he moved to Los Angeles, California three years later and met Vivian Jewel Coleman. The two wed in 1962 and raised five children.

Clark ultimately found a job as a Kindergarten teacher at Wiley L. Sapp Elementary School in 1977. He admitted that he was apprehensive on his first day at work, but after a great approval rating from his "little kiddies," Clark knew that he had indeed fulfilled his true calling. Often known as one of the pillars of Sapp Elementary, Clark founded the school's motto: "Shaping the kids of today for tomorrow." Clark continued to teach at Sapp Elementary until his retirement in June, 1993; he was succeeded by next door neighbor and best friend Bret Douglas.

Clark was such a joy to be around, be it at school, or at home. He loved and lived life, up to the fullest and beyond. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and he was a huge wrestling fan. Clark also loved to host Christmas parties, costume parties, and Fourth of July celebrations. It should be well documented that Clark just loved people—period. If he liked you, he would give you a nickname... and sometimes he would mispronounce names on purpose.

On August 31, 1996, Heaven dispatched its angels to take Clark on up a little higher, and at the age of 62, Clark accepted. His parents, one brother, and one sister preceded him.

Clark leaves to cherish his memory: His loving wife of 34 years, Vivian; three sons, Anthony Thomas, Ronald Louis, and Steven Joseph; two daughters, Cheryl Yvette and Danielle Renee; two brothers, Louis Ulysses and Franklin Virgil; two sisters Donna Nicole and Tanya Michelle; two son-in-laws, William LaBon and Philip Turner; three daughter-in-laws, Stephanie Brianne, Brenda Louise, and Monica Chantel; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

And of course, Mr. Jones is mentioned in Simply Bret.

Bret & Susie-- 30 Years in the Making

As we prepare for Bret and Susie's 30th wedding anniversary-- which will be July 12, 2010-- I decided to make this blog a pictorial montage, simply entitled "Bret & Susie-- 30 Years in the Making."

These photos are also in my book Simply Bret.

If Bret Can Write A Book, Then So Can I, Baby!

I guess that old adage rings true: "Give the people what they want." Having said that, allow me to introduce to you-- Vivian Jewel Jones.

Hi, Y’all. My name is Vivian Jewel Jones, but everyone calls me “Ms. Viv,” although those who know me very well know me as Jewel.

I don’t really consider myself as a writer—some of y’all might can do it, but not Ms. Viv… well, such was the case until now.

As many of you know, Bret wrote a book on his life, called Simply Bret. He came up with the idea to write his autobiography sometime after his 50th birthday. One Saturday afternoon, I went over to deliver some food to him, and there he was, at the dining room table, deep in thought, just a-typin’ away.

“Whatcha doin, Bret—writin’ a book?” I asked him jokingly.

“Matter of fact, Viv, I am,” he said as he looked up at me, then looked back at his computer to save his current work.

That was the start of something big. Bret’s book was released in January, 2010, and I was the first person that he called… well, spoke to. He tried to get a hold of Susie, but she was in a meeting.

“We done did it, Viv!” Bret shouted. “We got published!”

“Oh my word,” I declared. “Bret-Baby, I’m so proud-a-you. You sho’ did do it!”

So, to repeat what I said earlier: If Bret can write a book, then so can I, Baby!

This is just a little sample of what to expect in my second book, which will be out sometime in 2012. Until next time, take care and God Bless.

Flashback 1992: Ultimate Warrior vs. Papa Shango

Almost 18 years ago, I had the honor and the prvilege of attending a World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment) house show, in which the main event pitted the Ultimate Warrior against the mysterious Papa Shango. This match took place at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on Friday, June 12, 1992.

Truth be told—Papa Shango scared the hell outta me, because in the weeks prior to his match with the Warrior—who made a shocking return at WrestleMania VIII, the mysterious voodoo preist put a wicked curse on the Warrior, so much so, that Warrior suffered severe abdominal pain, and even had evil black goo dripping from his forehead.

Shango did not stop there; he placed his evil curse on the likes of preliminary wrestlers such as Brian Brieger, Rock Warner, and Chris Hahn. Shango even placed a curse on commentator Mean Gene Okerlund. I was so scared of Papa Shango that at one point, I begged my mom not to buy tickets to the house show. I soon changed my mind when I found out that Crush was making his return that same evening, but I wanted to leave prior to the main event, because Papa Shango vowed to place a curse on all of the Ultimate Warrior’s fans. My mom’s response: “I paid over 30 dollars for those damn tickets—we’re staying for the whole event.

Admittedly, I was a Warrior fan, but when the Warrior bolted to ringside, I didn’t say “Hey,” “Cat,” “Dog,” or nothin’! I sat my ass in that chair and just looked on in sheer awe. I was afraid that if Shango heard me cheering for Warrior, then he would hex me. The fans around me were cheering for the Warrior, yet I stayed stoic. I must admit, though, that I was glad that Warrior defeated Papa Shango, but I kept it to myself. On the way home, my mom and my cousins asked me why I so silent during the main event. When I explained my reasons for being silent, they laughed at me, naturally.

Here we are in the new millennium, and looking back on it now, I must give props to Warrior and Shango, because they kept my interest high. Even though this was a storyline, Papa Shango’s character was too believable for me.

Sneak Peek at "Simply Bret"

Hey, Y'all. Here is a sneak preview of what to expect from Simply Bret, in which over 30 copies have been sold. I hope you like it.

Susan Ariel Gosinheimer was her name; she stood 5’8” with long, flowing honey blonde hair and gorgeous crystal blue eyes. She was born and raised in New York City, but much like me, she left her hometown and accepted admission to South Carolina University. When she debuted as a freshman, I was entering my junior year, and Jack had already graduated. To this very day, Susan and I laugh about the first day we met on the South Cacka-Lacky campus—in more ways than one, mind you.

I had to attend a mandatory assembly after my Statistics class, and I was in such a rush not to be late that I was running. Unfortunately I ran too fast and I tripped. Of all the things to break my fall, it had to have been a swinging door. Apparently, Susie (as she is fondly called) opened the door, where it swung outward, and I crashed right into it. The door swung back right into Susie, knocking her into a wall. Ever the altruistic gentleman, I helped the young lady up and asked her if she was okay, to which she responded, “Oh, I’m fine, considering this is the story of my life. I’m always walking into walls and things.”

Susie had a sense of humor, and I liked it.

Well, after the impromptu head-on meeting, we got to know each other on a first name basis. I’ll never forget her cute intro: “Nice to meet you, Bret. I’m Susie Gosinheimer—well, actually, it’s Susan, but you can call me Susie.”

I noticed the look in her eyes as she said that. I thought that she was still a little dazed from colliding with the door and the wall. I never expected her to fall for me like she did. Admittedly, I thought that Susie was “the bee’s knees” when I first laid eyes on her, but I remembered what my brother Bob taught me— to play it cool when it comes to the ladies.

There was a big problem, though—at least in Susie’s mind, anyway. While Susie and I were talking and getting to know each other, Mary Ann had called my name out rather loudly, and I naturally responded; after all, we were friends. Mary Ann told me how I made her day by showing up at this particular assembly on account of she was giving a speech on behalf of her sorority. “I’m a little nervous, though,” Mary Ann stated, to which I caught her by the hand and told her that it’s natural to be nervous, but she would still do a great job. Mary Ann thanked me for the encouraging words and kissed me on the cheek, then went on her way. Upon seeing this, Susie looked at me and said, “Well, it was nice talking to you. I guess I’d better get going.” I thought nothing of it and said, “Okey-Dokey.”

This is only a sneak preview. You can draw your own conclusions, but only I know how this story ends. Take care.
